What happens to your life and work as an artist when you become a mother? Between 2016 and 2022, Andi Gáldi Vinkó photographed her own experiences and those of friends who are mothers. She captured the messiness, exhaustion, intimacy and unpredictability of motherhood, as a counterpoint to the idealised image so often presented in art, media and advertising.
In Sorry I Gave Birth I Disappeared But Now I'm Back, she asks questions that are rarely spoken out loud: how can something so universal feel so lonely, and what happens to the body, sleep, desire and career? In this Artist Talk, Andi Gáldi Vinkó speaks about how the work came into being and her search for a different way of depicting motherhood. Afterwards, she will sign copies of her book of the same title.
The work is part of Thinking Hands, which centres on knowledge that arises not only in the mind, but also in the body, through experience and through making. Vinkó's work makes tangible how motherhood changes the body, daily life and the way you see yourself, and how that lived experience becomes a form of knowledge.
