Emoticons don’t have wrinkles
This performance alternates between joy, self-affirmation, and vulnerability. It features a special camera helmet and Luna Maurer’s signature emoticon makeup. It’s a cocktail of digital tears and genuine emotions.
In a world saturated with seamless digital experiences, mixed media designer and performer Luna Maurer advocates for reintroducing friction and restoring connection. In a monologue, with her painted yellow emoji face, Luna inspires us to rethink our digital future and outlines an alternative techno-optimistic perspective. The performance is based on the manifesto ‘Designing Friction,’ written in collaboration with Roel Wouters, which advocates for an end to user convenience. Luna won the 2024 Gouden Kalf for Best Digital Cultural Production for the performance, which she performed during the opening of Pixel Perceptions.
