Symposium: Mirrors of Power

How do we shape our digital future?

The exhibition Pixel Perceptions explores the impact of artificial intelligence on our visual culture and society. Prior to the official opening on 27 October, the symposium Digital Mirror will take place, where thinkers and creators involved in the exhibition will discuss digital transformation and the role of art.

Dr. Vladan Joler  
Vladan Joler is the co-founder of the SHARE Foundation and a professor in the Department of New Media at the University of Novi Sad. He leads SHARE Lab, a research and data laboratory that explores the technical and social aspects of algorithmic transparency, digital labor exploitation, and invisible infrastructures. The 24-meter-long installation Calculating Empires, which he created with Kate Crawford and recently won the Prix Ars Electronica, is on display during Pixel Perceptions at the Akerk. labs.rs/en

Roosje Klap 
Roosje Klap is the general director of Noorderlicht. With her collective ARK, she participated in the 2021 Noorderlicht Biennale A Makeable Mind with the work LAWKI, for which the collective won the Gouden Kalf. In her role at Noorderlicht, Roosje aims to further develop the organization into a space where artistic experimentation and social engagement go hand in hand. She strives for a place of dialogue and renewal, where tradition and innovation come together to give visual art a social impact.

Ymer Marinus
Ymer Marinus explores the complex relationship between humans and digital technology. By hacking and reconfiguring technology, he seeks to uncover deeper truths about our digital world. He views technologies as politicized tools that can be transformed to serve more just and enlightening purposes. Ymer is a member of the trio Telemagic. In collaboration with artist Martina Raponi and the deaf organization Turkoois, Ymer created the interactive installation Unheard, commissioned for Pixel Perceptions, on display at the Akerk. https://telemagic.online/

Martina Raponi
Martina Raponi is an Italian writer, researcher, visual artist, and PhD candidate at ASCA, University of Amsterdam. Since 2012, she has been investigating the concept of noise, inspired by her father’s deafness, which led to her book Strategie del Rumore (2015). In collaboration with artist Ymer Marinus and the deaf organization Turkoois, Martina created the interactive installation Unheard, commissioned for Pixel Perceptions, on display at the Akerk. Raponi lives and works in Amsterdam. https://noiserr.xyz/

Marleen Stikker 
Marleen Stikker is the founder and director of Waag Futurelab. In 1993, she initiated De Digitale Stad (The Digital City), the first free portal to a virtual community on the Internet. She believes that society needs open technologies to address social challenges and follows the credo: “If You Can’t Open It, You Don’t Own It” (Maker’s Bill of Rights). Dr. Rosa Wevers
Rosa Wevers is a senior researcher in Art & Technology at the Knowledge Center for Art and Society (Hanze University of Applied Sciences/Minerva). She received her PhD in 2024 from Utrecht University on the theme of art and surveillance, and curated the 2021 exhibition Face Value for IMPAKT. At Noorderlicht, she works as co-curator on Pixel Perceptions and the 2025 Noorderlicht Biennale Machine Entanglements.
