The Road to School
In his work, Sam ten Thij searches for personal stories that deal with how we, as humans, relate to ourselves and our immediate surroundings, and ultimately to the larger world around us. In ‘The Road to School’, he follows five people – in short computer-animated videos made in a virtual reality environment – on their way from their parental home to their secondary school, while they talk about their personal relationship with the Netherlands.
The stories address themes of racism, privilege and drug use; and although each story is different, they all concern isolation, alienation, and the desire to belong to a community. With this project, Ten Thij responds to the rise in popularity of right-wing populism in the Netherlands and reflects on life in an increasingly polarised and globalised country.

Noorderlicht & BredaPhoto
As of 2021, the Noorderlicht International Photo Festival is a biennial for the three northern provinces in odd years. BredaPhoto will take place in even years. We will set up mutual programming at each other’s festival. Polymorf is one of the contributions of BredaPhoto this year.
