Singularity (2019)
German photographer Jan Stradtmann shot ‘Singularity’ on the north German island of Sylt. The group portraits show young volunteers working on the island’s nature projects, but they are mainly there to observe and experience the surroundings. They certainly do not represent the island’s stereotypical visitor: these young people are building the future by denouncing the past. Confronted with complex issues, they set different priorities and look for new ways of living for the future. In addition to the portraits, Stradtmann poetically and intuitively photographed geographical locations on the island, which is one of Germany’s main holiday destinations, renowned for its exceptional landscape.
Jan Stradtmann uses photography to describe his own fiction, developed on the basis of a true story. He is interested in urban landscapes and particularly in the moments of encounter between people and nature. He is particularly drawn to unusual and often invisible spaces and remote areas, as these yield a wide array of hidden stories. In exploring these, he offers the viewer insights into places they may never visit or simply do not notice. In most of his photography projects, he focuses on changing environments and the consequences for individuals caught up in them.
