It’s All Around You – Buot leat du birra

In It’s All Around You – Buot leat du birra, Gjert Rognli shows his Sámi background through photographs from Northern Norway, where he grew up.

The Sámi are Indigenous people living in parts of Scandinavia. Rognli’s images are about nature, silence, and memory. He shares how the Sea Sámi culture was almost lost, because the Norwegian government once forced people to stop using their language and traditions. This was called assimilation—making people give up their own culture to fit in. Many stories disappeared. Rognli brings them back by photographing places in nature that still hold this memory. He shows how the Sámi live with nature in a careful way: taking only what they need, protecting the land, and living in balance. His work asks us to think about heritage—what we pass on to future generations. It shows how nature, memory, and identity are connected, and how Indigenous knowledge can help us care for the earth today.
