In Sacred Grounds, Refrakt unveils the hidden infrastructures of our digital age.
Using a custom-built lightbox and an augmented reality app, visitors explore a magical mineral landscape where rare resources take center stage. Combining photogrammetric scans of 27 rare minerals from the Technical University of Berlin’s collection with playful digital animations, the work reveals how our technological devices rely on natural resources often extracted under harsh conditions. With the stones responding to the visitor according to their metallic and chemical qualities. Sacred Grounds shows the ways in which the extraction of natural resources underpins the sleek façade of digital technology.
