Follow the Sun
In Follow the Sun, Bart Eysink Smeets creates a video showing an endless sunset.
Using publicly accessible webcams—from surf clubs, hotels, and weather stations around the globe—the stream switches to a new location each time the sun sets, moving westward so the sun never fully disappears. Live feeds from places like Venice, Ibiza, Namibia, Lanzarote, Canada, Mexico, Japan, and Bali create a seamless sequence. The installation makes the elusiveness of time and space tangible, revealing how digital technology reshapes our experience of natural rhythms. By guiding us remotely through an endless movement, Follow the Sun reminds us how both connected and distanced we have become from the planet.
