Carrara

In Carrara, Lena Schabus combines various photographic fragments into a new, composite world.

She assembles and edits multiple photographs of Carrara, a city in Italy known for its famous marble quarries. By merging separate elements into a single image, she creates a landscape that appears realistic at first glance but reveals subtle inconsistencies upon closer inspection. Abandoned quarries and human interventions dominate this digital scene. Schabus highlights how the exploitation of natural resources permanently alters the landscape. Her work questions the boundaries between nature and industry, envisioning a world where human traces are so deeply embedded that they seem almost natural.
