This Autumn the Noorderlicht Photogallery is once more showing highlights from the still developing but strong oeuvre of the successful photographer and visual artist Phillip Toledano. From 26 October through 24 November his widely praised series of portraits A New Kind of Beauty, the moving Days with my father and the première of Maybe can be seen, along with other work. Furthermore, Noorderlicht is showing a selection of his paintings, installations and sculptures for the first time in Europe.

Phillip Toledano believes that photographs should be like unfinished sentences. There must always be room for questions and for the viewer’s own interpretation. Toledano’s work is socially engaged and varies in the medium chosen, ranging from photography to installations. Humour and exaggeration are often part of his visual vocabulary as an artist. They are undeniably present in the paintings and sculptures of Kim Jong Phil and the installation America; The Gift Shop, both of which are part of this exhibition.

The photographs in Phillip Toledano: inside out are more reflective in tone. With the highly personal Days with my Father and the series Maybe, being introduced in this exhibition, a clear tendency toward introspection can be detected in Toledano’s work. In Maybe, the closing section of a triptych about mortality, Toledano investigates his future.
