Friday’s Child: Hardship in Leeuwarden
Dineke Kaal
‘Friday's Child: Hardship in Leeuwarden,’ an exhibition that captures the reality of poverty and debt in Leeuwarden by photographer Dineke Kaal.
A nuanced picture of poverty
Poverty is more than just a lack of financial resources; it touches deeply on people's social and mental well-being. The project was inspired by the previous Noorderlicht exhibition ‘Hardship, stories about poverty’, which was successfully shown at the Gevangenismuseum in Veenhuizen in 2022 and later travelled around the country at other locations.
In cooperation with the municipality of Leeuwarden, Noorderlicht wants to use this follow-up project to paint a nuanced picture of poverty in Leeuwarden and contribute to deeper awareness and empathy among its residents.
Focus on resilience and awareness
Photographer Dineke Kaal, whose work focuses on the human aspect of social issues, is supported in this project by an experienced coach who acts as a sounding board on this difficult subject. She has drawn inspiration from the resilience and courage of people in difficult circumstances. With a combination of photography, slide projections and music, she aims to create an experience that not only informs visitors but also touches them emotionally.
Target groups and impact
The exhibition is intended for a broad audience: residents of Leeuwarden, policymakers and people living in poverty themselves. By focusing on the stories of those involved, Noorderlicht hopes that the exhibition offers visitors a new perspective and encourages them to look at poverty differently. In addition, the exhibition is a valuable.
