What do our hands know?
Thinking Hands explores just how much knowledge is held within our hands and bodies. Many skills aren’t something we learn from books, but through doing: by practising, repeating and experiencing.
In this series of workshops, we explore together with people from Groningen where this embodied knowledge resides, and what might be lost as technology takes over more and more of the things we do with our hands. This time, we focus on an everyday skill: repairing a bicycle tyre. What happens when we no longer need to do these kinds of things ourselves?
In this workshop, bicycle mechanic and artist Zjuul Wiersema will teach you how to find and repair a puncture. AI can explain exactly how to fix a flat tyre. But does that mean you can actually do it? In this workshop, you’ll discover how to locate a puncture, how precise you need to be, and how your hands learn to recognise when something feels right.
Step by step, you’ll repair a bicycle tyre yourself. You’ll experience how attention, precision and practice make all the difference, and go home with a skill that will serve you for years to come.
