Imagine yourself on an island in the middle of the ocean

To the west of Marrum, high up on the dyke, is the futuristic-looking pumping station de Heining, the ideal setting for Ewa Doroszenko’s meditative and digital-virtual underwater reality.

The Polish artist is fascinated by modern information technologies, such as virtual worlds and games, and their potential to shape lifestyles. Doroszenko looks for ways to capture, as authentically as possible, the duality of the physical and virtual life we experience in our time. The film – inspired by digital landscapes from computer games and the digital distortions that come with it – shows how we try to find balance in the age of information overload.

For despite, or perhaps precisely because of, technological progress and the digitalisation of reality, we are looking for rituals and spiritual experiences that lead us to a deeper consciousness, or at least simulate it. Doroszenko based her self-written text on popular YouTube meditation sessions. In this manner, she depicts our strong desire for relaxation, which is an integral part of our overburdened digital age.
