Through the cracks, do we upgrade or grow?
In Through the cracks, do we upgrade or grow?, Steven Maybury explores the hidden infrastructures that support our digital world.

Across the Netherlands, new fiber optic cables are being laid—technology that transports vast amounts of data using laser light at high speed underground. During a residency at the Goethe-Institut, Maybury focused on the relationship between light, memory, and digital photography. The installation, consisting of fiber optic cable sculptures, a C-type photo series (a high-quality sequence of photographic prints), and a new poster collage, highlights how these networks shape our memory and daily lives. By visually connecting cables to natural structures like root systems, the work questions whether we are still growing—or simply speeding up. Through the cracks, do we upgrade or grow? exposes the usually hidden foundations of our digital society and calls for careful attention to how we handle them.
