We Eat the Earth

We Eat the Earth explores how our food reshapes the planet.

Crystal Bennes focuses on fertiliser — a core component of industrial farming — and reveals its hidden costs. Though fertiliser supports food production, it also damages soil, pollutes water, and drives carbon emissions. Through archival material, field photography, and research, Bennes traces how fertiliser links sites across the globe: from illegal phosphate mining in Western Sahara to toxic waste islands in Sweden, and nitrogen runoff tied to political unrest in the Netherlands. The Dutch chapter of the project combines local archival research with on-the-ground imagery, offering a layered view of how policy, agriculture, and environmental degradation intersect. We Eat the Earth offers a powerful reflection on how resource extraction in farming destabilises both ecosystems and societies.
