Ecologies of Memories
Ecologies of Memories explores how our memories of nature slowly fade.

The work is based on the idea of “Shifting Baseline Syndrome,” where each generation sees the current state of nature as normal and forgets how much richer it was in the past. Using fifty years of ecological data from the Netherlands, combined with AI-powered image changes (interpolation), Nina van Tuikwerd creates a video landscape that shows subtle yet deep environmental transformations. Visitors are immersed in a visual journey where lost plants and animals reappear. This piece reveals how knowledge about our ecosystem can vanish from our shared memory, and encourages a deeper understanding of environmental history. By combining data, memory, and technology, Ecologies of Memories invites us to reflect on our shifting relationship with the living world.
