Morad Bouchakour (1965) has been photographing the strongly religious Mexican Mennonite community since 1993. In two series the lives and the modernization of the Mennonites can be seen. The first series shows their traditional and very isolated life in Mexico. Changes can only happen very slowly. The second series follows Mennonites who work as cheap seasonal workers in Canadian agriculture, due to the economical situation in Mexico. The young people in particular, living in modern cities, profit from the new situation to rid themselves from the conservative traditions. The people photographed by Bouchakour are portrayed in their work and living environment. The socio-economic context in which they find themselves is of great importance in the image.
