The activity program comprises, among others, a photobook fair where several publishers and dealers present their collections, and the 'Photo Looking Day' where people can come by with their hidden jewels. Both activities takes place on sunday, September 26th.

Several lectures, discussions and photocafes will also be held, plus a range of courses on photography in joined forces with the Art History department, State University of Groningen (details are available on the Dutch pages).

Book fair

Noorderlicht organizes a special fair. The book of photographs will be at the centre. Attention will be given to Dutch and foreign books of photographs. Anyone who is interested will enjoy it to the full this afternoon. Several antiquarian bookshops and publishers from home and abroad will be present this day to present and explain their products. Next to books, original black and white photos by Ed van der Elsken, Van Moerkerken and Joel Peter Witkin will be offered for sale.

Big Picture Show of Groningen

The inhabitants of Groningen will show their own historical pictures to a panel of experts from The Rijksmuseum, The Leiden Printing Gallery, The National Photographic Restoration Studio and the archives of Groningen. From these pictures the exhibition "In The Light of Groningen" will be composed. This exhibition will open the same day at 6 pm. Anyone who brings pictures is free of charge.

Tom Fecht & Adrienne van Eekelen
Photo Cafe: "Wonderland"

Tom Fecht and Adrienne van Eekelen both participate in the main exhibition. They represent the two "Wonderland" poles: the conceptual and the documentary element. Tom Fecht and Adrienne van Eekelen will be interviewed about their work by Machiel Botman, the "Wonderland" co-compiler. They will tell something about their own development as photographers and talk about their work within the "Wonderland" context. Machiel Botman will go into the main exhibition's basic idea also.

Workshop: Tools of Creation, Secrets of the Production of Photographic Space

The workshop will investigate the relation of body to camera and will develop a practical and theoretical dialogue between these two artistic instruments. It is about time, gravity, acceleration and the body from a bird's perspective, as well as the communal production process of this ten hours lasting experiment. Each participant has to bring an object concealing a secret and a photographic self-portrait of 18 by 24 cm at most.

Joep Neefjes (L.P.I.) & Rommert Boonstra
Photo Cafe: About creating another reality

Joep Neefjes does on a large scale what Rommert Boonstra does on a small scale. Katalin Herzog, Modern art teacher at The University of Groningen, will interview them about the creation of a new reality. Neefjes won the photography assignment of the city of Groningen in 1998. He is the Dutch manager of Loodwick Press Images, a press agency and photographic archives in Paris, known for the creation of made up realities. During Noorderlicht his pictures will be exhibited in The Beeldende Kunst Centre in Groningen. Rommert Boonstra's staged photography appeals to people's imagination. Boonstra arranges all kinds of objects and images on a table using sheets of glass, mirrors and artificial light, thus creating an imaginary world. Boonstra won the photography assignment of Groningen in 1994.

Fred Schmidt of Publishing company De Verbeelding will talk about the possibilities and impossibilities of publishing books of photographs. Frido Troost of Publishing company Basalt will review the ten most beautifully published books of photographs. Both gentlemen will talk about this.

Larry Towell
Workshop: The Intimate Picture Story

This two day workshop/seminar will is for freelance and staff photojournalists as well as documentary photographers who want to explore the picture story from a personal perspective. The workshop will include a portfolio review with each photographer, a discussion on the process of story-telling in books, exhibitions and magazine assignments and how to develop editorial ideas surrounding independent projects that are important to the photographer. Larry Towell will deal with the mechanics of the individual image and what makes one work better than the other, plus ideas that explore how to become more involved in the culture of documentary photography. Each participant must bring a selection of his/her work in print or slide form for evaluation and discussion.
