What does it mean to man when a place which offered security is lost, without knowing whether you can ever go back? Can we comprehend what it means when the earth below our feet is littered with landmines aimed to mutilate and kill us? The cycle of violence in Afghanistan has had a huge effect on physique and psychology of the Afghans and their country. An ancient Dari saying goes: "When two bulls fight, the leg of the calf is broken"; the Americans and the Russians play out a drama where the Afghans are the victims. Fazal Sheikh (1965) gives voice to the people that are the subject of his photographs. They are respectfully portrayed, with marvel at the resilience present within families and communities. The individuals give something of themselves to the photographer and help to come to a better understanding of this complex country. In the exhibition the images go hand in hand with probing testimonials of inhabitants. |
