For Noorderlicht 1997, Jorge Heredia (1958) specially produced an installation in which personal images and religious symbolism are the central point of focus. Around a central point which exists among other things out of sand, stones and candles, photographs and handwritten poems are, in a separate space. In many cases the photographs are out of focus which gives them a mysterious quality. The use of the light contributes to this. That which is portrayed seems to play a subordinate role.
In El Sacrificio, the sacrifice, the atmosphere of a mystic ritual is evoked by the use of candles, incense and music. Heredia tries to optimize this atmosphere to let the viewer experience some kind of elevation, using his images to achieve this. This experience is an important element in his work. "I try achieve the ultimate synthesis in my work. My work can be viewed as a quest, the goal being to lead photography back to the essence: light". |
