Robert Lyons & Bill Arnold - Workshop: 'About looking/ About place'
Date: Saturday September 20th and Sunday September 21st Time: 10am - 5pm. Location: USVA, Munnekeholm 10 Admission: f 150,- ; students f 100,- Limited number of participants (12) Language: English
Central to this workshop is the peronal way of looking at things; looking at that which is familiar and unfamiliar. Teachers Robert Lyons and Bill Arnold (United States) will work with participants in small groups and will go into content and technical aspects individually; from concept to performance to presentation of the final visual statement. The technical discussions will cover general things varying from colour versus black-and-white to specific materials (film, paper, and methods of presentation) used to create a unique visual style.
Lyons and Arnold will discuss how camera work not only contributes to self-awareness but also how it can be used to discover ideas which surpass individuality: things shared by man and things concerning man. Narrative is mainly focused on. How is this created and which technical factors can help you to express your ideas completely. The workshop lasts for two days, including Saturday evening for the printing of work made that day. Both photographers are experienced teachers, and contribute to The Garden of Eden with their own work.
Laura Samsom-Rous - Workshop: 'The portrait as a metaphore'
Date: Sunday September 21st Time: 10am - 5pm. Location: USVA, Munnekeholm 10 Admission: f 75,-; students f 50,- Limited number of participants (12)
Laura Samsom-Rous (The Netherlands), whose work can be seen in the main exhibition, is occupied intensely with portrait photography and is regularly active as a teacher in this field. During this workshop the portrait will therefore be the focus point. A portrait does not (only) deal with the person portrayed, but can also serve as a symbol for an idea. The portrait becomes a metaphore, its meaning outside the image itself. On the basis of her own work and work by the participants, this workhop will investigate how fashion can change and make a portrait take on a metaphorical meaning; a new charge. The workshop has the form of a masterclass, in which there will be no active photography.

They will then enter into a discussion with eachother and the audience led by Melchior de Wolff, photo critic at the daily Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant.

Bettina Flitner - Video presentation: 'Mein Feind'
Date: October 4th Time: 8.30pm Location: USVA, Munnekeholm 10 Admission: f 5,- Language: English
At the exhibtion Unbeschreiblich Weiblich? the series 'Mein Denkmal' by Bettina Flitner (Germany) can be seen, which make up a trilogy together with the series 'Mein Herz' and 'Mein Feind'. The video presentation organised by Flitner is a recording of reactions to the series 'Mein Feind'. Women were asked who their biggest enemy is and why. They could choose between a number of symbols to be photographed with, thereby reinforcing their statement. The photographs have been on display in the city of Cologne on large billboards. This triggered many reactions by people shopping. Flitner then went into the streets to record these reactions on video. This video will be presented at the USVA and Flitner will explain her motivations concerning 'Mein Feind'. A discussion with the audience will follow. |
